Welcome to Music Meets Academia’s

SING IT! RAP IT! ACT! and DANCE!
… in our ELA TEST REVUE!
FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GENERAL MUSIC OR GRADES 5 AND ABOVE

Educationally speaking, except for a few ditties of various lengths written to help students memorize and understand rules for learning specific concepts in the various disciplines, this is the first actual music written about English Language Arts that I, personally, have ever seen or heard.

Music Meets Academia presents an incredible opportunity to enhance student experiences using this unique combination where Music meets and merges with English Language Arts (ELA).

In presenting this opportunity, we see how related these two disciplines are, and how their unique combination offers opportunities for the inner blending and balancing of each one’s own mind, heart, and soul – and ultimately the person that they become. Too serious? I don’t think so at all, and it is so easy to do.

Students will review the selected rules and concepts in a highly complementary way, as they will learn and know that reading, writing, speaking, listening, storytelling, rhyming, using visuals, and many more communication skills are huge common denominators; when students think and aim for becoming any kind of writer. How many have been encouraged to professionally write: poetry, books, television movies or sitcoms, a hit song – both lyrics and music, a musical, rap music, and so much more? ELA communication skills are a must! And, as the very famous poet, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is known to have said, “Music is the Universal Language of All Mankind.” Music is also about great communication skills, even when the spoken languages are different.

More

KNOWING that many ideas can become wonderful songs is a valuable lesson to be learned from this project. Since the majority of songs, including those in the various commercial genres, are continually written with a kind of Romeo and Juliet mentality, fact or fiction, one could wonder, “Is it possible to wear out love songs?” I doubt it and do not think that is going to happen, nor should it! But still, there are so many other things to write about in this world.

In ELA, many of my students liked and even loved writing assignments instructing them to write about the familiar. That was usually when they were at their best, and they wrote very well. The same was true with a few music students who were in these same ELA classes. All these students liked – and yes, some even loved – performing to music that was about the familiar, even English language arts.

Please remember that teaching these two disciplines together does not take away from either. It does the opposite by enriching our students’ lives and encouraging them to learn more about each and other subjects, as well.

So, here’s wishing you and your students the very best. Test Revue can be a life changing experience, as your students learn and perform in SING IT! RAP IT! ACT! and DANCE! … in our ELA TEST REVUE!
